What we do

Hartnack & Company are a small artisan bindery that specialise in making high quality, one-off bespoke binders and boxes for a variety of customers and business's that are located in the U.K. and around the world.

Everything we make is hand crafted and made to order, bespoke to either a special individual, event, organisation or vehicle.

Importantly we don't make 100's of anything, we just concentrate on doing small quantities but very well. As such we specialise in 'the special'.

Who Are We

Hartnack & Company are a small family business and we are located in the rural and beautiful county of Devon in England.

Things began in 2014, in our spare room, when the need arose for a certificate binder for our daughter.

Since then things have moved on a bit and we have grown into what you see on these pages. As a family business, we take what we produce personally. We aim to deliver a superior, quality product surpassing the expectations of those who buy them, and hopefully making a few friends along the way.

Our Story

How It's Made

Everything we make is custom-made and hand-crafted in our Devon studio. We create bespoke products, so each order is unique and tailored to the contents it will carry. It’s a one-off, with varying sizes, colours, options, and of course, personalisation. As a result this is not something that can be mass-produced in a factory.

Each item is carefully hand made using traditional techniques. While this may take longer, this ensures that our products whether they are boxes or binders are made properly and will last. It requires skill, attention to detail, and a labour of love, but we are incredibly proud of what we create and hope you will be too.

What our customers have to say about us.

Since 2014 we've been lucky enough to grow a long list of happy customers. One of the perks of our work is to receive letters of thanks from people once they have received their delivery.

Ocassionally we get reviews, some of which you see below.

Our Review Page

"...From start to finish the procedure, craftsmanship and delivery is second to none. They show off my images so well and the portfolios look so good either on a coffee table or on shelves. An excellent company to deal with. You will not find better."

I highly recommend them for anyone’s most important keepsakes. Worth every penny and more! You’ll never regret this quality purchase!."

"...Jackie and Nick were unbelievable in helping me create the most unforgettable folder for one of my directors who retired earlier this year. They worked above and beyond the call of duty to rectify these issues, and created the most incredible folder that brought my boss to tears when he opened it.

I would highly recommend this company time and time again, and as I said, their attention to detail is fantastic.."

3 (very) Good Reasons Why You Need To Invest In a Bespoke Classic Car History File

Do all the documents relating to your much cherished classic car currently reside in a well-used, off-the-shelf ring binder or box file? Does the spine contain the brief details written in black Sharpie? It would be unkind and unfair to say ‘Shame on you’ as quite frankly you weren’t aware there was an alternative, but there is and here there are at least two reasons why you must change this and invest in something better, far better!

Ring Binders and Box Files for Both A4 and US 8.5 x 11 Letter Paper

The advantage of a custom made filing system is that if you have paper work in A4 as well as 8.5 x 11 inches (US letter size), we can make your binder cover fit both sizes, so no more compromising with overhanging pages. We can also even supply plastic page sleeves that fit both sizes of paper.

The Car Behind The Binders - Ferrari 365 GTB/4

A bit of back ground behind the box set that we made. What was the car and what was the brief? In this case a 1973 Ferrari 365 GTB/4, which was of course dark blue with a red leather interior.

What is UV printing?

We offer full colour, digital “UV Printing” as an option of having your designs and artwork printed onto binders and boxes, but what actually is UV Printing? This brief article hopefully explains it and shows you how it is done,

Bespoke luxury pilot logbook binder with 100 logten logbook pages

Pilot Logbook Binders: Home Printing Logten Pilot Pages

More and more pilots are using digital logbooks. One of the downsides to digital is keeping a hard copy up to date. Quite often pilots use professional printing services to do this, but actually with LogTen Pro, you can print them off on your home printer very easily and very effectively. Here's guide to show you how to do it.

Custom made and personalised triple slipcase with 3 ring binders by Hartnack and Co

The Making Off: This Triple Slipcase

A triple slipcase like this is firstly sized around it's contents (the binders) which are also exactly sized around their contents (A4 and 8.5 x 11 pages sitting within plastic sleeves and dividers, that sit perfectly within the inner cover). The box itself consists of 24 boards a quarter of which are different sizes, 10 of which are lined. It is assembled with carefully glueing and careful assembly.

custom made box with a high quality stepped joint construction by Hartnack and Co

The Stepped Joint - Why we use it in making our boxes.

We often refer to "stepped joints". Why do we use it? Well according to the Library of Congress "The step joint is used for constructing corners of the majority of boxes because it is more rigid than a simple butt joint This stepped joint is also used to join the base to the wall (of the boxes) board. A further reference to the step jointed corner maybe found in Fragments of Bookbinding Technique by T. Harrison (1876 - 1955)"
