It's time to make some changes and they'll be worthwhile
Do all the documents relating to your carefully chosen, probably much cherished and meticulously looked-after classic car currently reside in a well-used, off-the-shelf ring binder or box file? Does the spine contain the brief details of your beloved car, written in black Sharpie? Possibly something similar to the photograph above on the left?
It would be unkind and unfair to say ‘Shame on you’ as quite frankly you weren’t aware there was an alternative, but there is and below there are at least two reasons why you must change this and invest in something better, far better!

We use the word “invest” deliberately, a custom, individually handmade (bespoke) item of anything is not going to be under three figures, and custom made binders are no exception. That said, at the time of writing, a pint of beer in London is approaching £10, while a decent pair of off-the-shelf trousers can easily cost close to £100. Neither is likely to provide decades of service - A bespoke classic car history file can.
It can provide years of satisfaction while you own the car and, when the day eventually comes to sell it, the way its history and provenance are presented can make an important impression on the next owner and that is when it will repay itself.
Reason 1 – Your car's history file should be as individual as the car
A history file made specifically for your car, in colours that complement its exterior or interior, with the marque, model, registration number, chassis or VIN details embossed or printed onto the cover and spine – simply looks better than a tired lever-arch file with its details handwritten on the side.
More importantly, it belongs to that car. It is a one-off, made specifically for the car sitting in your garage. It has little relevance to anything else, and that is rather the point.
You should be proud of what you have in your garage. More than that, it should bring you pleasure every time you see it and, of course, every time you drive it. The same can be true of its history file.
Seeing a beautifully made, personalised classic car document binder sitting on your bookcase should remind you of what is in the garage. And if you are fortunate enough to own more than one special car, each history file can reflect the colour, character and branding of the individual vehicle.
A glance across the room immediately tells you – and anyone else – which bespoke binder belongs to which car.
There is also another more serious reason for presenting a car's records properly.
A significant part of the story, provenance and desirability of a classic car can be contained within its history, which in turn is reflected in it's value: original sales documents, invoices, service records, restoration photographs, correspondence, ownership records, MOT certificates and receipts accumulated over many years. If your car has a remarkable history, provenance and story, that story deserves more than an unremarkable folder.
Your classic car history file should reflect your classic car and your appreciation of it.
And even if the car's paperwork is not particularly extensive or historically important, the car is important to you. A bespoke history file elevates what you do have and makes the documentation part of the pleasure of ownership.

Reason 2 – Presentation matters when the car is eventually sold
One day, your classic car will be up for sale – either by you or, eventually, by somebody else. It is inevitable. And when that day comes, its history files will come out. So here is the important question.
Even if the paperwork inside is exactly the same, which makes the greater impression on a potential buyer?
An anonymous lever-arch file, folder or box file with a few details handwritten on the spine - as per the image on the left at the top of the page?
Or a custom-made ring binder or box file, perhaps made in colours that complement the exterior or interior of the car, with the marque and the car's individual details beautifully embossed or printed onto the cover, as per the image on the right?
Surely, it is the latter. Which would you, dear reader, rather see accompanying the car you were considering buying, and eventually sitting on your own bookshelf?
There is another, more subtle message conveyed by a carefully presented history file:
“This person clearly cared about this car.”
If an owner has gone to the trouble of commissioning a bespoke, personalised history file specifically for the vehicle, it suggests a certain approach to ownership. Attention to detail matters to them. Presentation matters. The car's history matters. While the contents of the file, can provide proof of it's maintenance and its comprehensive history it will certainly reinforce the impression of careful and meticulous ownership.
This is when, your now modest “investment” gives something back to you financially. Emotionally it has given you that little lift for years, but now it’s making a statement about you, and your meticulous ownership. With everything else you no doubt have spent on the car, the value of it is buoyed a little more than the original investment that you made with Hartnack & Co.
Considering everything else we spend maintaining, restoring and enjoying classic cars, a beautifully made history file is a relatively modest finishing touch.
Reason 3 – For concours cars, details really do matter
We said three reasons – although this final one is particularly relevant if you enter your car in shows, club competitions or concours events.
At closely contested events, a car's history, provenance and presentation can all matter. These events are not simply beauty pageants; they are about detail, originality, history and the quality of the overall presentation.
When only a small number of points separate exceptional cars, even the way supporting documentation is organised and presented can contribute to the overall impression on Concourse judges.
