Hot foiling presentation folders can be soul destroying as no matter what you do you can’t quite get the foil to take in all the areas. However, sometimes be very rewarding and this is one of those occasions.

It helps to have a consistent logo and Jonny Radford’s logo was defiantly that. The type was all the same size and thickness, the temperature you required to make the ‘J’ work was the same as it was to make the ‘R’ work as well. So often you get is mismatch of sizes and thickness’s (reverse type!! argh!) and while you might have got a beautiful clean filling solid area of foil, the fine bits are over foiled. In the opposite direction, the fine bits can be perfectly legible but the solid area is as patchy as a crocheted blanket.

Foiling is a matter of transfer the colour foil off the.. foil? and onto the fabric. The bigger the area, the more heat is required, the finer the area, the less heat. What adds to the complication is that your put this foil onto a very uneven surface, bookcloth, which is very grainy and requires a great deal of pressure to flatten the surface out as much as possible.

All of these elements very seldom work together, so when you get something to work perfectly, you feel very proud of yourself! (even though it had more to do with the logo design than anything else)
